EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Iowa’s 4×400-relay team placed fourth and clinched first-team All-America status at Hayward Field on Friday night. The team of Landon Fontenot, Zidane Brown, Josh Pugh and Terrick Johnson clocked the second-best time in program history at 3:01.61. It is the ninth time in Iowa track and field history and first since 2022 that the men’s 4×400 has earned first-team honors.
“What an amazing finish to the season for the men,” Iowa Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “I am so proud of how they competed this entire year, especially when we got to the championship season. We have a great group of seven to eight guys that have all run on our A relay at some point this season. They have all been very unselfish and team-first individuals. They all represent what it means to be a great teammate and great Hawkeyes.”
The Hawkeyes ran from lane eight with Fontenot leading off, running the first leg in 46.55. The freshman handed off to Brown, who turned in another incredible split of 44.38 to push Iowa towards the lead. Pugh grabbed the stick and sprinted 45.55, before giving way to Johnson who closed out the Hawkeyes’ performance with a 45.16.
“Landon (Fontenot) set us up with a huge first leg to put us in the top three on the exchange with Zidane,” Woody added. “Zidane took the stick and did what he’s been doing all season and ran a tremendous second leg to move us into first at the handoff to Josh.”
“Josh kept his composure with the lead and ran very confidently with another great leg to keep us in the mix handing off to Terrick,” Woody said. “Terrick ran a great anchor with his fastest split of the season to help the relay finish fourth and earn first-team All-America honors.”
Iowa’s men’s team scored 11 team points and placed 29th at the 2025 NCAA Championships.
Up Next: The 2025 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships conclude with the finals of the women’s events on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Maria Arboleda will compete in the high jump final at 7:30 p.m. (CT), while Daniela Wamokpego goes in the triple jump at 8:10. On the track, Iowa’s 4×400 relay team races at 10:20 in the night’s final event. A top-eight finish would be the first time the program has earned first-team All-America recognition in the event.
