IOWA CITY, Iowa – Four-star forward Trey Thompson apparently can’t wait to start playing for new Iowa men’s basketball coach Ben McCollum.
The 6-foot-8 Thompson has committed to Iowa and will reclassify to the 2025 class. He will skip his senior year of high school in Tennessee and join the Hawkeyes this coming season.
Thompson picked Iowa over scholarship offers from Purdue, Vanderbilt Clemson, Connecticut and Kansas among others.
He is ranked as the No. 81 overall recruit in the 2026 class according to the On3 Industry ranking, and the No. 3 player in Tennessee.
“I chose Iowa because there was a need for me now,” Thompson said to On3. “I wanted a significant role and I wanted to get better this year. They gave me both of those, so I decided to say yes.”
McCollum was hired as the Iowa men’s basketball coach in late March, replacing Fran McCaffery, who was fired the day after the 2024-25 season ended, and after 15 seasons as the Iowa head coach.
McCollum led Drake to a 31-4 record this past season in his first and only season with the Bulldogs.
He has since spent the past three months rebuilding the Iowa roster, and has added a key piece with Thompson’s commitment.
